Research shows that children perform better at school when their parents are involved in their education.
What does a P & C do? The TBSS P&C is about people – people just like you – parents, care givers and community minded people who want to help our school. You work very closely with your school, building a stronger school community, where all children benefit. When do we meet? The P&C meets the second Monday of every month at 7pm in the staff room or the third Monday if there is a public holiday.
Why join the P & C?
Actions always speak louder than words when it comes to valuing your child’s learning. 2008 Presidents Report
The year of 2008 was a building year for the Trinity Beach State School P&C. It was a year where key changes were made to place us in a stronger financial position. It was also a year of publicity and progress, as the school received wide-spread media coverage over the state of our facilities. That attention triggered a rush of maintenance and improvements that marked a turning point in my mind regarding what we could achieve as a group. My congratulations go out to the parents who took such a strong stand.
As my first time as P&C president, I found it both rewarding and challenging. It’s a bigger role than I anticipated, but fortunately I was surrounded by a great P&C executive who did a fantastic job in executing their respective roles. Thanks Richard, Sandy, Sue and Matt. I was also impressed by how hard many parents worked to help raise funds and remain at the ready to assist where needed. My sincere thanks to my fellow parents for all that you have done for our children’s school in 2008. I hope to see even more parents in 2009 as far too few do the work of many.
A rewarding achievement for your executive was the inclusion of our kid’s school council representatives in our P&C meetings. Going forward we will now have a stronger link to our students, their needs, their ideas and we’ll be better placed to help them grow.
Our fantastic bike bus initiative has attracted high level attention from the state government, Dept. of Main Roads and is an entrant in the Showcase of Excellence awards. We had shown our kids how a simple bike ride is valuable exercise and a lot of fun. The bike bus is a fabulous idea that has placed our school in the state spotlight and already brought offers of significant financial support. Expect to see some new bike shelters and facilities in 2009. Our kids love it and the bike bus will be expanding in 2009. Well done Mark Allen and Scott Johnson.
I wish to thank our school patron, Steve Wettenhall, member for Barron River, for his regular attendance at our P&C meetings and ongoing support of our plans. We know his internal pressure helped to push Education Queensland into action on our behalf.
Financial
We are in a much stronger financial position than we were a year ago. This is due to tighter financial controls, better systems and the diligent efforts of our treasurer and book keeper. Thanks Sue and Beatrix.
At the end of 2008, the P&C has a total of $78,400 in its accounts after installing a new kitchen in OSHC.
In 2008 the P&C voted to increase the voluntary parent contribution to $50 a term and channel that money into a building trust fund, thereby making their contribution’s tax deductable. This will build a valuable financial base to permit us to plan more ambitious projects in the coming years.
In 2009, the P&C is budgeting to raise $140,000.
Tuckshop
We are very grateful for the ongoing work and professionalism of Margaret in the Tuck Shop. She runs such a smooth operation and looks after our kid’s lunch diets with wonderful care. We are very lucky to have you Margaret and appreciate all that you do.
The tuckshop returned approximately $17,900 to the school via the P&C in 2008.
Out of School Hours Care
We are all very proud of the job that Nichola and her team have performed in the OSHC in 2008. A year ago we considering outsourcing this service, but now we have a financially strong business and great resource for our parents. Nichola and the P&C reps have brought about much needed changes to place the OSHC centre in a growth mode. It is running at full capacity and the addition of before school care is being considered.
The OSHC returned approximately $4,100 to the school via the P&C in 2008. Note that this will improve dramatically in 2009 due to better systems.
Facilities
Fortunately our facilities received much needed maintenance in 2008 and the school is looking much better. We are all very much aware that the significant publicity triggered by some enthusiastic parents and the P&C resulted in a rush of repairs. We should all be proud that we took a stand and were not afraid to speak up. Many people will never know the earthquake we triggered in Education Queensland and how this has shaped our future. By highlighting our needs and plans, the school has recently been offered some major new facilities for 2009 construction. These include a new full size hall, new 4 bay library and a new science and technology centre. While these offers are yet to be confirmed by the federal government, we are confident they will all come through, especially the new hall.
The P&C would also like to thank Richard Black and all the parents who gave up their time to repair and improve aspects of the school. A lot of landscaping and paving are the result of their kind efforts.
As president, I learnt what a huge job our principal has. Ian Moller-Nielsen is a dedicated educator and leader. He has endured a lot of fallout from the P&C publicity, yet remained positive and on track. Trinity Beach State School is the great school it is, because of our principal, Ian Moller-Nielsen. Thanks mate !
Plans for 2009
Forget the recession, Trinity Beach is forging ahead. In 2009 we have ambitious plans to transform the schools environment.
Our plans may include:
and finally….
In the space of one year, Trinity Beach State School has moved from a visibly unkempt state to a tidy school, bursting in energy, enthusiasm and well positioned to be known as the finest primary school in the region. Go kids !!
